MG has been manufacturing and selling electric vehicles since 2019, with each model making its mark on the EV world. With the UK government encouraging cleaner energy, more drivers are switching to electric cars for a greener, more efficient way to travel.
EVs are becoming popular, but many drivers still have questions about charging. You may not know what charger you need, where to find one, or how to charge your car for the best range at the lowest cost. To help, the team at Eric Stead MG has created this simple guide. No matter which MG you choose, you’ll be ready to charge for your next journey.
Ways to charge an MG
MG electric cars support both Type 2 and CCS connectors for both fast and rapid charging. Depending on whether you choose to charge your MG EV at home or at a public charging point, the speed and cost of charging will differ.
Charging at home
For many drivers, charging at home is the easiest option, with 80% of EVs being charged at home. In the UK, you can charge an electric car at home using either a normal 3-pin plug or an EV home charger or dedicated port. A normal plug is generally slower and more inconvenient than a home charging port. Home ports usually offer faster charging than the 3-pin alternative, allowing for faster, cheaper charging, but do incur an initial cost for installation.
Charging at a public point
For when you need to charge on the road, there are also a number of public charging points up and down the country. These chargers can be found in places like car parks, supermarkets, service stations, and often offer much faster charging than charging at home, with some charging your vehicle to 100% in under an hour. To use these ports, simply park your EV in a dedicated EV parking space and pay via card or, in some cases, an app to start charging. Fast and ultra-fast chargers are great for topping up quickly on long trips so you can get back on the road sooner.

Charging a plug-in hybrid
Unlike an all-electric MG, the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid combines the power of both combustion fuel and electricity. Often using petrol as the main fuel source, the electricity stored in the battery pack is used for longer journeys, where the battery is depleted first, before the car switches over to the fuel engine to maintain performance. PHEVs allow for dual power, but still release emissions, so although they often are subject to lower road tax, they are not exempt like their all-electric counterparts.*
The cost of charging
The cost to charge your car depends on factors such as:
- Battery size
- Your electricity rate
- When and where you charge
- Time of day you charge
In the UK, electricity usually costs between about 24p and 35p per unit (called a kilowatt-hour) during busy times. This average changes depending on your location, supplier, energy tarriff, and time of day you’re charging. Many drivers choose to charge at night, where costs can be 50% less than peak times, so low that full chargers can cost under £5 on some vehicles!
For this guide, we’ll work out charging costs using the 24p–35p average for home charging, and 65 – 80p for public charging, so you can gauge the lowest and highest potential costs of charging your EV during regular hours.
